He has signed modelling contracts, walked for Lahore’s Bridal Couture Week and has appeared on Pakistan’s television shows. Arshad Khan, popularly known as Pakistan’s blue-eyed chaiwala, is on a roll. And now he’s starred in his own music video.
With a catchy hiphop track, Chaiwala features, somewhat obviously, female fans expressing their adoration for the 18-year-old’s looks. But it seems like rappers Sid Mr Rapper and Dj Danny don’t seem to be happy with all the attention they aren’t getting. So they call the women “tharki”.
Then there’s a line that pretty much sounds like what Yo Yo Honey Singh would rap – “Mashhoor ladkiyon ka superman, le jaaoonga bhar ke van” which translates to, roughly: Arshad Khan is so popular that he could carry a van full of women who consider him a superman.
But here’s the part where the lyrics don’t seem to make sense. Khan’s luck is praised to the skies but after putting him on par with Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the rappers dismiss him to get them some “kadak chai”. This sounds like the famous catchphrase, “Go make me a sandwich”, which plays on the stereotype that women belong in the kitchen.
In this case, it’s the Chaiwala.
